Not your ordinary joe – National Wellness Authority, Joe Piscatella, offers SIX-week Wellness and Heart Health Program

RENO, Nev. (Feb. 15, 2013) –One of the country’s foremost authorities on lifestyle habits and heart health, Joe Piscatella, will offer 6 Weeks to a Healthier Heart – a six-week wellness program designed to improve heart health. The program will focus on lifestyle changes that can have a lasting impact on overall and heart health.

Piscatella underwent coronary bypass surgery at age 32 – and according to his doctors, his prognosis wasn’t good. He found a way to stay faithful to a healthy lifestyle, turned his life around and now is one of the longest-living survivors of bypass surgery – 35 years and counting.

This program is designed specifically for people who could benefit from practical tips that can be applied to daily life to achieve lasting results. Piscatella’s seminars – which TIME magazine calls a “force for positive change” – have inspired millions to achieve a healthier, better-balanced life.

Cost for the six-week program is only $50, which includes all six sessions, as well as pre- and post-fitness profiles to track results. The fitness profiles include a blood draw to calculate total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), triglycerides and glucose, as well as weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) measurements.

Program participants across the country have reported proven results upon completion of the program. “On average, participants have lost 10.5 pounds, reduced their LDL cholesterol by 6.2 percent and increased their weekly exercise and activity by 28 minutes,” Piscatella said. “What’s even more impressive is that participants continued to report positive results even five months after the program ends. It is truly inspiring to see people adopt healthy lifestyle habits and improve their health.”

Each weekly 90-minute seminar focuses on a specific topic. All seminars will be held 6-7:30 p.m. at Hyatt Place , 1790 E Plumb Lane in Reno .

Sierra Club Responds to NV Energy Proposal for Retiring Coal Plants

Sierra Club Responds to NV Energy Proposal for Retiring Coal Plants

Coal retirements promising but questions remain on mix of renewables, energy efficiency, and gas

Carson City – A proposal being rolled out by NV Energy today in the state legislature would set new retirement dates for Nevada’s coal plants, including speeding up retirement of the controversial Reid Gardner plant. The legislation also increases new renewable energy and allows NV Energy to build several new gas plants.

In response, the Sierra Club Energy Task Force issued the following statement:

The Sierra Club welcomed news of NV Energy’s intention to retire the Reid Gardner coal plant by 2017 and to end its contract with Navajo Generating Station’s coal-fired power by 2019. The Club also expressed support for adding new renewable energy projects to replace some of the coal power.

“With this legislation, NV Energy unequivocally acknowledges that Nevada wants and needs to leave coal behind. Closing the Reid Gardner coal plant would clean up Nevada’s air pollution and reduce health risks for thousands of Nevadans,” said Jane Feldman, Sierra Club state Energy Task Force chair. “We strongly support closing that plant and fully cleaning up the site, including the polluted lands, air and water near the Moapa Band of Paiutes’ Moapa River Reservation.”

“Replacing that coal power with renewable energy will create jobs for Nevadans and a better future for our children. We are pleased to see additional renewable energy called for in this bill,” said Feldman.

However, Sierra Club said that concerns remain over NV Energy’s proposals to build new natural gas plants and suggested that more emphasis on energy efficiency and renewable energy is needed. “Energy efficiency can put money right back into the pockets of consumers every month,” said Feldman. “And if we build more renewable energy, costs remain stable for decades because the fuel costs for solar, wind and geothermal are free,” she continued.

Sierra Club is continuing to study the bill and will provide detailed input to the legislature as these proposals move forward.

Connect Nevada annual survey reveals 75% of residents now subscribing to broadband service, up from 67% in 2011

March 30, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

Carson City – Connect Nevada today released new data showing that broadband adoption in Nevada is increasing, with 75% of residents now subscribing to broadband service, up from 67% in 2011. Mobile broadband usage also increased from 46% in 2011 to 54%.  Despite this progress, not everyone in Nevada is benefitting from these advances in technology.

“We’re excited to see healthy growth in Nevada toward embracing the amazing educational, professional, and quality-of-life benefits that high-speed Internet provides,” said Connect Nevada Program Manager Lindsey Niedzielski. “However, this new study makes it clear that the expense of the service is now creating a digital divide. Connect Nevada is working hard to address broadband access, adoption, and use across the state so that every Nevada resident is offered the same opportunities for a bright and prosperous future, regardless of factors like age, race, income, or where they live in the state.”

The data are available via an interactive widget on the Connect Nevada website.

Among the key findings of the residential survey are:

  • Three out of four Nevada households subscribe to home broadband service, which is an increase of 8 percentage points from 2011. Despite this upward trend, more than half a million Nevada adults still don’t subscribe to broadband service at home.
  • Mobile broadband is also growing in popularity across Nevada. Statewide, more than one-half of Nevada adults (54%) use mobile broadband, up from 46% in 2011. This includes 55% of rural Nevadans.
  • Nearly half of Nevada’s low-income households do not have home broadband service, and approximately 48,000 low-income Nevadans rely exclusively on mobile broadband service.
  • Expense plays a role in whether Nevadans adopt both home and mobile broadband. Approximately 105,000 Nevadan adults who do not subscribe to home broadband service say that the monthly cost of service is too expensive, while 104,000 Nevadan cell phone owners do not subscribe to mobile broadband on their cell phones due to the monthly cost.
  • Nevada cell phone owners report that the main reason they subscribe to mobile data plans is for the freedom of being able to access the Internet while away from home.

Connect Nevada conducted this survey in support of statewide efforts to close the state’s digital gap. It explores the barriers to broadband adoption, rates of broadband adoption among various demographics, and the types of activities broadband subscribers conduct online, among other findings.

While the results show broadband adoption increasing, approximately 513,000 adults (25%) in Nevada still do not subscribe to the empowering technology of high-speed Internet. To address this digital divide, Connect Nevada offers the Every Community Online program, which offers free digital literacy training and low-cost computers and Internet access.

For the 2012 Residential Technology Assessment, Connect Nevada surveyed 1,201 adults across the state in late 2012. Connect Nevada conducted this survey as part of the State Broadband Initiative (SBI) grant program, funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce, National Telecommunications and Information Administration, and by the American Recovery and Reinvestment of 2009.

Connect Nevada is a nonprofit organization that was commissioned by the state to work with all Nevada broadband providers, create detailed maps of current broadband coverage, and coordinate efforts with other Federal grant award recipients in the state. Connect Nevada is now supporting the development of a statewide plan for the deployment and adoption of broadband. The goal is to spread high-speed Internet across the state and make sure all Nevada residents have access to its life-changing benefits. For more information visit: www.connectnv.org.

Nevada Volunteers to Present over $600,000 to Legislature

Nevada Volunteers, the Governor’s Commission on Service, will present the Nevada Legislature in Carson City on February 28, 2013 at 9:45 a.m., a check of $679,276.  Nevada Volunteers distributes the AmeriCorps*State funding allocated to Nevada from Congress and is the state authority on volunteer information.

“This check represents the value of AmeriCorps members and all the volunteers they recruited last year to address unmet needs throughout Nevada” said Shawn Lecker-Pomaville, CEO of Nevada Volunteers.  “By providing the modest state match to this federal funding and investing in service as a strategy to solve problems, Nevada’s leaders saved the state $679,276.”

AmeriCorps*State is a cost-effective program that provides direct, results-driven services in the areas of education, human services, public safety and the environment.  AmeriCorps service gives individuals an avenue to help their communities while gaining real world experience and  earning an education award. During the grant year of 2011-2012 alone, 308 AmeriCorps members served 259,930 hours and recruited an additional 3,579 volunteers.  This impact in Nevada communities continues to multiply each year.

Upon completion of a member’s term of service, he or she is offered an education award  equal to the Pell Grant, which  can be used to pay for college, graduate school, vocational training, purchase educational supplies, or to repay student loans.  Those 55 and older during their time of service, can transfer their Educational Award to children, grandchildren or foster children.

iHop Serves Hospitalized Children Free Pancakes Day Early

On the eve of National Pancake Day, International House of Pancakes (IHOP) is delivering short stacks to patients at Renown Children’s Hospital. The “breakfast for lunch” will be served with special toppings to children without diet restrictions at the hospital from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Feb. 4.

The annual National Pancake Day effort is designed to raise money and awareness for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children, by raising funds for children’s hospitals throughout the United States.

Tuesday, Feb. 5, IHOP guests can enjoy a free short stack of pancakes between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. at any local IHOP in Reno, Sparks, Carson City and South Lake Tahoe. In return IHOP asks that guests donate what they would have spent on the pancakes to Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. On this day, the restaurant chain hopes to raise more than $3 million nationally to kick off the 2013 fundraising year for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

Guests are also encouraged to buy a Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals paper balloon for an additional dollar that will be placed on the wall with a name. “Miracle Balloons” will be sold for $1 and $5 each. Miracle Balloon sales offer guests another way to show their support of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and contribute to the fundraising effort locally in northern Nevada.

This will mark the eighth year that IHOP has held National Pancake Day, which to date has raised more than $10 million dollars nationally for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities. In northern Nevada, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has partnered with IHOP since 2006 and has raised more than $38,800 to benefit Renown Children’s Hospital. All funds raised at local IHOP restaurants will be donated directly to Renown Children’s Hospital.

“Our IHOP team does look forward to National Pancake day because they know that their efforts and all monies raised stay local and go to Renown Children’s Hospital,” said Peter Kouis, regional manager for IHOP. “They know this event impacts not only their own children but also other children in our community as well.”

To find a local IHOP or to donate online, visit www.ihoppancakeday.com.

Senior Care Plus Offers Daily Meetings During medicare Enrollment Period

RENO, Nev. (Oct. 15, 2012) – Senior Care Plus, a Medicare Advantage Plan offered by Hometown Health, is hosting daily informational group meetings to assist current and new members during the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period, which is Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, 2012.

During those dates, Medicare eligible beneficiaries can sign up or make changes to their current coverage, including choosing a Medicare managed care plan (Medicare Advantage or Stand-Alone Prescription Drug plans).

With this opportunity to select private health insurance for next year, these informational meetings are designed to answer questions regarding the impact of Health Care Reform on Medicare Advantage. Additionally Medicare eligible beneficiaries will be able to select the right insurance plan, with an effective date of Jan. 1, 2013, and complete their Annual Election Form.

“After Dec. 7, members will be locked into their plans until next year’s Annual Enrollment Period,” said Matt Ladich, director of government programs for Hometown Health. “Medicare Advantage plans can offer greater medical, prescription drug, and supplemental benefits in one plan with one insurance carrier versus other arrangements – this allows for lower costs and convenience to the beneficiary.”

Those interested can call 775-982-3191 or toll-free 888-775-7003 to choose from daily sessions held at the 850 Harvard Way offices. Walk-ins are welcome and home appointments may also be available. Additionally, specific meetings will be scheduled in communities outside of the Reno Sparks area at various libraries and senior centers. Reservations are strongly recommended. Visit seniorcareplus.com for more information.

Many Medicare eligible beneficiaries may wait until it is too late to enroll in managed care plans. These plans offer more cost savings and benefits than traditional (fee-for-service) Medicare. Senior Care Plus wants to educate the public about the change and cut down on possible beneficiary confusion and frustration.

Senior Care Plus, a product of Hometown Health Plan, Inc. is contracted with the Federal Government to offer a Medicare Advantage Plan with prescription drug coverage, available to anyone with both Medicare Parts A and B. Hometown Health is pleased to have been awarded another contract with Medicare for 2013 and will continue to offer its plans for a 17th year. Members must be residents of Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Storey and Washoe counties and continue to pay his or her Medicare Part B premium.

The management and resources of the R. D. Merrill Company ensure high standards of service and long-term commitment to quality, security, choice and privacy in all Merrill Gardens communities.

This long time family company has roots that extend back to the 1890’s when R.D. Merrill came to the Pacific Northwest to establish timber holdings.  In 1993 Merrill Gardens was conceived when the company purchased a retirement community in Seattle, Washington.  In 20 years, the company has grown to become one of the largest and most respected senior living companies in the country.  Merrill Gardens is still a privately owned family run company; Chairman Charlie Wright is a fourth generation Merrill family member.

Merrill Gardens purchased its first independent and assisted living community in Seattle, gaining insight into the basic operating profile of the industry. The company then built a community from the ground up in Monroe, Wash., learning design and construction. Through new construction and timely acquisition of existing communities, Merrill Gardens is the third largest private company in the industry.

About Life Care

about Life CareYour family is special with its deep bonds and unique relationships. Facing a dramatic change – such as moving a loved one into assisted living or a nursing home – is an unsettling prospect for most people. Life Care Centers have helped families for decades to work through the difficult decisions about how best to care for their loved ones. We understand how trying it is to choose nursing home care for your loved one, and how most struggling caretakers feel there is no other choice.

That’s why we’re here.

We want those special members of your family to become equally special members of ours. We want to relieve the anxiety and frustration you may be experiencing by providing a nursing home community of constant support, attention and personalized care. Above all, we want to serve each person entrusted to us with compassion, dignity, purpose and respect.

That’s not just our goal. It’s our privilege.

Services

At Life Care Centers of America, we take elderly care very seriously. That’s why we offer residents a wide range of living arrangements and amenities, services and care. From home assisted living to retirement living to nursing homes – and even campuses that offer all three in a continuum of care – Life Care has the experience, expertise, and dedication to provide a full scope of specialty services.

Whether your needs include Alzheimer’s care, in-home nursing care, rehabilitation or recovery help, or any of a number of other specialty services, Life Care will be there, with all the support, education, and commitment you and your loved one need.

Rehabilitation

Life can deliver some unexpected twists: accidents, sudden illnesses or emergency surgeries can happen when you least expect them. And in the aftermath of such events, your energy is focused primarily on recovery—trying to also find the best available resources for help can be pretty challenging.

At Life Care, we understand the intense desire to recuperate and get back to normal as quickly as possible. But serious illness or trauma can sometimes force you to relearn even basic functions. The struggle to regain those lost capabilities while still recovering is frustrating and often overwhelming.

That’s when our teams of experts can make an overwhelming difference. Our skilled therapy services can hasten your recovery, help return lost skills and bring back strength and mobility. Our caring professionals work tirelessly with our residents not only in physical areas, but also by constantly supporting and encouraging them emotionally.

We believe our residents are the extraordinary people who refuse to allow temporary setbacks or disabilities to affect them permanently. Their determination and effort become invaluable tools in the rehabilitation process.

And it is our greatest privilege to partner with them—or you, or your loved one—during recovery … and become your strongest advocates in the road to reclaiming total wellness.

Life Care Centers of America

The sun setting is no less beautiful that the sun rising.

Imagine living in a beautiful, peaceful environment, surrounded by friends and activities.

Caring for Life…
Since 1970, Life Care Centers of America has been providing unequaled nursing care and assisted living service. Our continuum of care campuses give our residents an individual care plan through various levels of care. But it\’s our commitment to quality and professionalism that makes us second to none.

Nevada-Senior-Guide Emeritus Senior Living-Las Vegas

www.emeritus.com

NSG_NovDecJan_2013-14_Web17

At Emeritus Senior Living, our residents’ well being is our top priority. We know that the number one reason people select a senior living community is the quality of the care they receive. (NIC National Survey) The ability to provide the most comprehensive and consistent personal care services begins with the resident evaluation process.

To that end, Emeritus Senior Living created a state-of-the-art computerized resident evaluation tool called wE Care™. This powerful software tool allows us to accurately evaluate and monitor all the personal care services of your loved one.

wE Care™

  • Provides current/immediate information on residents and allows improved communication from shift to shift
  • Generates specific care plans and task lists for your loved one so no services are overlooked
  • Allows for highly individualized information about your loved one’s needs, preferences, and special requirements
  • Customized to each resident, which means you only pay for the services that you need
  • Lessens the burden of administrative tasks, so that care staff can spend more meaningful time with your loved one

How our Resident Evaluation System Works:

Our system builds individual care plans from the completed evaluation, assigns tasks for staff and schedules the date of the next evaluation.

We understand that every senior has different needs and desires, so a selection of elder care services are available through the Emeritus Senior Living Family.

Expect us to take the time to get to know you – your interests, goals and desires – and to carefully evaluate your personal health history and care needs. Based on that evaluation, we’ll create a Service and Care Plan that reflects your specific needs. From getting up to getting around all day, help is always close at hand. Your plan may include any combination of the following:

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC)

Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) provide a variety of services depending on your needs. From independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing these communities allow you to remain in the same familiar and comforting environment even if you should require extensive assistance.

Independent Living Services

When you choose to move into an Independent Living Community, you will continue to live the same lifestyle that you have become accustomed to at home, only you will have more time to enjoy your hobbies and socialize with friends, and you’ll spend less time worrying about housekeeping and maintenance.

Assisted Living Services

As we get older, many of us naturally need a helping hand – perhaps someone to help us get ready for the day, help manage our medications, or prepare special meals to fit our unique dietary needs.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

Many of our senior living communities are designed to care for seniors with Alzheimer’s, Dementia and/or memory loss issues.

Skilled Nursing

We are committed to helping you return home as quickly as possible by providing around-the-clock nursing care from some of the most professional licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, dieticians, and physical and occupational therapists in the industry.

Long-Term Care

At Emeritus Senior Living we are dedicated to providing customized services to meet the individual needs of our residents. In select communities across the nation, we offer Long-Term Care and support for residents.

Rehabilitation Services

Our goal is to help our residents maintain or improve their level of functioning and help them lead more active and independent lives. Our communities partner with a wide range of healthcare providers who bring their expertise directly to the residents of our communities.

Respite Care

Most Emeritus communities offer a unique program called Short-Stay Respite. You’ll receive the same services all residents enjoy in a fully furnished apartment-home-cooked meals, scheduled transportation, customized assisted living services and more.

Hospice Care

At Emeritus Senior Living, we want to make sure that every moment is as comfortable as possible for your loved one if Hospice Care is needed.

Adult Day Programs

If you are living on your own or with family, you can also choose to spend the day with us through our structured Senior Day Care program.

In Home Visits

At an Emeritus Senior Living community, we are committed to making sure that local seniors in need find the combination of programs and services that serve them best, even if it is not with us.

Designed for Better Health and More Independence

At our communities, retirement living and assisted living doesn’t mean dependence upon others; it means independence. How? When seniors have the opportunity to meet new people and join in new activities, when they’re served three healthy meals a day, when they’re taken to their medical appointments and provided the daily assistance they need, their level of functioning improves. And when they’re feeling better, they have greater independence and can enjoy life more.

Most Emeritus senior living communities offer these amenities:*

  • Choice of private or shared apartments with a variety of floor plans and sizes to meet virtually any need
  • Some apartments are fully furnished – and all can be individualized with your own belongings
  • Large walk-in showers with safety features or full baths
  • Individual climate control
  • Spacious common areas, including living room, library and TV room
  • Private dining room and catering services for special occasions
  • Smoke detectors, fire alarms and sprinkler systems
  • Completely maintenance-free, inside and out
  • Beautifully landscaped grounds offering an ideal setting for relaxing outdoors

And these services:*

  • Two or three homemade meals served each day, restaurant-style, coordinated by a registered dietician
  • A diverse, full-time recreational and educational activities program
  • Scheduled transportation for shopping, visits to nearby attractions and to medical or dental appointments – no more fighting traffic or searching for parking!
  • Weekly housekeeping, linen and laundry service
  • 24-hour emergency alert call systems

And many of our senior living communities also allow residents to bring their pets!

* Depending upon your situation and health concerns, assisted living services are also available.
