People are living longer these days than in years past. The average age of longevity is not as young as it was, and it is not unusual for people to live well into their nineties. Baby boomers started becoming senior citizens several years ago, and they want to have better health. Yet many more people may be interested in maintaining good health than in earning money when they are in the autumn of their lives. They want to find ways to enjoy better health as they age. Convenience and Product Selection Encourage More People to Manage Incontinence Online, Parentgiving.com Survey Reveals
For the first time in its five-year history, the senior wellness site Parentgiving.com conducted an opinion survey on incontinence, reaching out to nearly 5,000 of its customers who shop for self-care products in this category. The focus was to learn how people best cope with incontinence and if a greater awareness about it as a medical issue has erased its stigma and prompted more people to talk to their doctors about treatment. Respondents were also asked to share both their frustrations and their strategies for maintaining quality of life.
Results show that progress is being made. Slightly over 70 percent have talked to their healthcare provider about incontinence—many of them are taking or have tried medications, and a few have had surgical procedures.
But nearly 30 percent of respondents have still not sought medical attention. Reasons are varied. A few people still feel too embarrassed to bring it up, even in front of a doctor, while some assume it’s just a normal part of old age (it’s not!) or don’t know that there are treatments that might help. Others say they have more life-threatening medical issues, from diabetes to stroke recovery, that take precedence when they’re at the doctor’s office. For a few, the possibility of yet another medication to add to their existing regimen would be financially out of the question.
More Key Points From the Parentgiving Survey
* Fear of accidents is the top concern.
Two-thirds of respondents ranked this as their number one worry. The lack of product selection came in second at 21%. People want more product choices, which will, in turn, help them feel more secure about avoiding accidents.
* Online is the way people want to buy products.
Nearly 46% buy products online where they can get the widest selection and have anonymity.
* Absorbency is the key feature in choosing products.
An overwhelming 81% ranked this first. Information on a product’s absorbency should be front and center on product descriptions, say the respondents. Comfort ranked second and the ability to buy a product online ranked a strong third at 36%, above both cost and anatomical design of items.
* Many people are satisfied with their incontinence products. In fact, 40% are very satisfied. However 44% are only somewhat satisfied—there’s room for better education about products to help people find those that are more effective for them and the respondents had numerous suggestions for incontinence product manufacturers to improve styles.

For senior citizens, sometimes it feels like time is running out. The oldest of the baby boomers entered the realms of becoming seniors several years ago. This large group of the population has been influencing markets for years and still do so. Because money is not plentiful for a number of seniors, many are working menial jobs at stores or fast food outlets. The reasons for doing so may be varied such as for extra income necessary to make ends meet or to simply have a place to go and enjoy the company of other people. Many are searching for home based businesses as a means of supplementing their social security or other meager retirement income.
Although there are thousands of wealthy senior citizens, there are undoubtedly many more who struggle in their daily lives. They find it difficult to pay for necessities like shelter, food, and medications. Some seniors find life has little meaning, but it does not have to be that way. Keeping one’s mind and body active helps a person feel better and act younger.
Dorothy Dale Kloss is an example of someone who is young at heart and young in actions although at age 85, she is the oldest showgirl in the Universe according to the Guinness Book of World Records. Dorothy decided she needed something to do fourteen years ago so she auditioned with the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies. She got the job and now dances at about nine performances each week. She has been dancing since she was five years old and obviously loves to dance. Upon seeing and meeting her, there is no way that anyone would guess that she is 85.
Although time may be running out, seniors can still find ways of being productive, engaged citizens who can still enjoy life to the fullest.

Many senior citizens wouldn’t even consider lifting weights or performing strength training exercises, thinking that’s something for much younger, fitter people to do.
A person is never too old to perform strength training exercises, though. In fact, frequent exercise is the best prescription for independent, active and healthy aging, according to the A.A.R.P., the National Institute on Aging and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Studies show that all adults, even seniors, can benefit from as little as 15 minutes a day of moderate cardio exercise. Thirty minutes a day of light to moderate cardio exercise is the optimum level, and the good news is the cardio exercises can be broken up into segments (ie: brisk walk in morning, afternoon swim).
Adults, including seniors, are also recommended to perform strength training exercises two-three times per week.
Although exercise programs for seniors (generally considered people age 50-60 and older) are modified considerably from what younger generations are doing in the gym, senior strength training can help people of any age increase muscle strength, strengthen bones, fight off and-or delay the effects of arthritis, and improve balance and mobility. Regular exercise is also important to help maintain strong heart function and a healthy weight.
Jim Androsik, a physical therapist for Wooster Commuinty Hospital’s HealthPoint Health and Wellness Center in Ohio, has witnessed great benefits from the seniors he’s worked with who have followed a strength and conditioning program.
“Generally, the senior citizens we work with are people 60 years-old and up who are referred to us by a physician,” Androsik said. “Doctors give us some guidelines, such as the frequency and duration a person should exercise for and comments on their health in general.
“We then develop a program for them.”
Exercise programs for seniors can obviously vary greatly depending on age and health, but typically there are basic guidelines Androsik has his seniors follow.
“We generally recommend that a senior perform strength training exercises two to three times a week,” he said. “We look at their needs to determine exactly what exercises they’ll do, such as if they’re experiencing back pain, shoulder pain, arthritis, etc.”
Here’s a basic exercise program for seniors based on Androsik’s advice and other research I’ve conducted. Again, these are general recommendations and seniors should consult with a physician before beginning an exercise program. It would also be highly beneficial for seniors to exercise as part of a group or class, to help with motivation, to make sure they’re using the right techniques and, of course, to enjoy the social aspect of exercising):
Cardio exercise (3-4 times per week)
Tip: Perform low-impact exercises that are easy on your joints. Start very slowly before increasing duration and resistance. Start with 5 minute cardio workouts and slowly progress to 15 minutes or more if you can.
Pick from the following: Treadmill, walk on track, exercise bike, pool workout, yard work, etc.
Weight lifting/strength training (2-3 times per week) Tip: Androsik says it’s important to do high repetitions on exercises with low resistance or weights. Do light stretches before performing strength training exercises. Here’s a sample strength training program a senior might perform:
* Good mornings 1 x 15 (one set of 15 reps) tip: stand straight, slowly bend down to touch toes or reach down as far as comfortable, rise back up and repeat.
* Shoulder rotations 1 x 15 tip: stand straight with arms out parallel to side, rotate shoulders 15 times in each direction. Good warmup exercise.
* Sit Ups – 1 x 15
* Side Bends – 1 x 15
* Squats – 1 x 12-15 tip: Use barbell, machine or without weights. Keep back straight by looking straight ahead at spot on wall, go down as tolerated but no lower than parallel with knees.
* Lunge – 1 x 12-15 tip: hold dumbbells to make harder
* Calf Raise – 1 x 12-15 tip: hold dumbbells to make harder or use machine.
* One Arm Rows – 1 x 12 – 15 tip: balance one knee on bench, other leg on floor. Pull dumbbell up and down with arm on side of body planted on floor. Builds shoulder strength.
* Rotator cuff with band or machine – 1 x 12-15 internal rotation, 1 x 12-15 external rotation. tip: have a doctor or trainer show you how to do these, great for preventing shoulder pain.
* Dumbbell curl – 1 x 12 – 15 tip: do them seated or standing
* Dumbbell bench press – 1 x 12 – 15 tip: do them lying on a bench
* Dumbbell flyes – 1 x 12 – 15 tip: do them lying on a bench
* Triceps extension – 1 x 12 – 15 tip: use machine or dumbbell. This is just a general plan to give seniors some ideas, but it’s best to work with a trainer. Tweak as needed. Remember to use light weights and do high reps.
“Exercise can provide lifelong benefits,” Androsik said. “It can minimize or slow down arthritic changes.”

Someday you may come to the realization that you have become a senior citizen. When we are young, we think old age is so far off that we never worry about reaching it. Many baby boomers have seen great success in their lives, and they are used to having a good life. They will make sure that their quality of life continues.
Realizing that you are a senior citizen is not a bad thing. It does not have to be a signal of being old. There are many senior citizens who continue to work and contribute meaningfully to society. There are others who have retired but who engage in service related activities. There are those who make the most of life and live it to its fullest by traveling or having new adventures.

Depression is a medical condition that is characterized by feeling down, depressed, or hopeless; low self-esteem; and loss of interest in things one used to enjoy. Senior citizens are prone to life-altering changes that can lead one to feel depressed. Dealing with the trials life throws at us such as, loss, change, loneliness, or a chronic medical condition can be quite overwhelming. Still, depression is not a “normal” part of aging. Like heart disease or diabetes, depression is a medical condition and it can be treated with medication and therapy. Treatment is effective at alleviating symptoms within a few weeks in at least 80 percent of people.
It is important that senior citizens and those providing their elder care understand the symptoms of depression. If you think you or someone you know may be suffering from depression, identify your symptoms by using the checklist provided below. Then, if necessary, seek assistance. For senior citizens, the most frequently used resource is a family doctor. Bringing a trusted friend or relative may help ease any anxiety when going to an appointment. Check your medications. Senior citizens often take many medications. Some medications, including those for sleep, blood pressure, and nervousness, may affect mood. Talk with your doctor about each of the medications you are taking. Be sure to include all over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements to minimize the chances of having side effects.
Limit alcohol consumption. Alcohol use can bring about depression. And, when alcohol and drugs are combined, interactions that lead to depression can occur.
Stay connected. Sometimes, senior citizens find it more difficult to get out and stay connected with others. Still, talking with friends and family members, getting a pet, or even finding a new interest or hobby can help one through this tough time. Get involved in activities you take pleasure in, such as reading a good book, going to a ballgame or a taking a class in a subject that interests to you.
Be active. Physical activity can improve physical and mental wellbeing. Though some senior citizens believe they cannot exercise, there are activities like walking, gardening, or working out (even if one is in a wheelchair) that can be helpful. Make a goal of 30 minutes of activity 5 days a week. If you have not taken part in physical activity in a while, be sure to check with your doctor and get his OK before you begin.
Eat healthy and drink plenty of fluids. Choose healthy snacks like fruits, vegetables, yogurt, or nuts to increase your nutrition and energy. Also, try to eat well-balanced meals. Some senior citizens suffer from loss of appetite and weight loss; if you have experienced either of these, consult your doctor.

Free Senior Help Fair Provides Vital Information & Services
The Senior Help Fair is a collaborative event hosted by community-based organizations comprised of health care, senior service providers and government. The HELP Fair attendees will be treated to a variety of vendors, offering health and wellness screenings, health-related tips and information about local services from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday Sept. 6, 2012, on the campus of Christ Lutheran Church, located at 111 N. Torrey Pines Drive.
The Senior Help Fair is a one-stop destination for information about local services and organizations and is open to all ages. More than 50 agencies and companies will be on hand to provide information on community services for seniors. Community agencies will be on hand to help seniors connect with resources. Assistance programs that will be available include nutrition support, energy assistance, medication costs, affordable housing, legal services and transportation including the TAP taxicab assistance program. There will also be free health screenings for blood pressure, diabetes risk, vision, falls risk and dementia.
“This fair will help all seniors and those who care for them navigate the programs and services available to help people and to give voice to their concerns regarding services and resources,” said Senior Help Fair Organizing Committee Chair Jeff Klein. Individuals, who are 65 or over, should bring their identification and Medicare cards.
Along with the more than 50 agencies and companies offering information and services, free lunch will be served to the first 200 attendees, local singer Mark Miller will be providing entertainment and many door prizes will be offered on the hour.
The best time to think about aging is before the need arises. If an emergency happens, family members have to scramble to seek out options for care within a short time period, often not being able to take the time to make the best decision. “There are still a large number of people in the state who do not know what senior services are offered, or that these services even exist, so we will continue outreach efforts to the community,” said Commission on Aging member Lucy Peres “The goal is to raise awareness of health and safety related services in the state.”
The fair will also provide an opportunity for seniors to speak with their legislators and voice their opinions and concerns on issues that affect their daily lives.
