NEW Barbershop Chorus Hits the Stage Running

The Silver Statesmen barbershop chorus, only six months old, is already making a name for itself.
With Jim Halvorson at the helm as our new director, the chorus has met competition head-on in Ontario, CA where they were awarded Plateau A Chorus Champion in their division. They will compete in October in Bakersfield, CA, where the Far Western District competition gets stiffer with choruses from Arizona, Nevada, Southern Utah, California, and Hawaii.
With nearly 80 men on the roster, the Silver Statesmen will be performing locally at four different venues to celebrate the 75th anniversary of their parent organization, the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The show, “Celebrate Harmony”, will be at these locations:

■ Friday, August 2, 7pm, Sun City Anthem – Freedom Hall, 1815 Hovenweep St., Henderson
■ Saturday, August 10, 7pm, Sun City Summerlin – Starbright Theater, 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd., Las Vegas
■ Sunday, August 11, 2pm, Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Dr., Las Vegas
■ Saturday, October 5, 2pm, Desert Spring United Methodist Church, 120 N. Pavilion Center Dr., Las Vegas

The Silver Statesmen chorus is Nevada’s largest men’s a cappella group. It is an award-winning, all volunteer chorus known for its thrilling, close harmonies and commitment to musical excellence.

The chorus is chartered as the Las Vegas Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Proud to perform and preserve the unique sound of “barbershop” harmony, the chorus also sings a broad repertoire of other musical styles.
The chorus provides singing, music and performance education opportunities, as well as Youth In Harmony programs in communities within the Las Vegas Valley and throughout Southern Nevada. The chorus, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit educational organization, is self-sustaining through gifts, performance fees, admission to shows, and other fundraising activities.

The Silver Statesmen invites men of all ages to join. The chorus rehearses at 7pm each Thursday, at Christ the King Community Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Dr., Las Vegas, NV 89118. For more information, visit www.silverstatesmen.com

Betty White’s “Off Their Rockers” TV Show Is Demeaning to Older People, Says Octogenarian Anti-Aging Expert Barbara Morris

Betty White’s “Off Their Rockers” TV Show Is Demeaning to Older People, Says Octogenarian Anti-Aging Expert Barbara Morris

ESCONDIDO, Calif., May 2, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — While everyone loves Betty White, not everybody loves her TV show, “Off Their Rockers” according to octogenarian anti-aging expert Barbara Morris, editor, and publisher of the online Put Old on Hold Journal and e-Magazine.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130502/PH05987-a )
(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20130502/PH05987-b )

Morris, author of Put Old on Hold, a book acclaimed by Florence Henderson and other celebrities for its non-traditional approach to aging, says that while she admires Betty White’s energy and creative ability, the premise of “Off Their Rockers” is so distasteful that Morris doesn’t understand why Betty can’t see that she is not doing old people a favor with the show’s premise of seniors pulling pranks on unsuspecting folks. The “unsuspecting folks” are usually embarrassed young people. “The whole idea is embarrassing to a lot of us older folks, too,” says Barbara Morris.

“Why did Betty decide to do this show?” asks Ms. Morris. “Is it because she is so confident and so vibrant that she can’t understand that most of her audience doesn’t grasp that she is trying to spoof the pathetic stereotype of “old” and see it as confirming it instead? Maybe she is so focused on getting a laugh that she doesn’t see the damage she’s doing.”

“Regardless of her reason to create this misguided show and no matter how good her reason, it’s still damaging to all of us who ever get old enough to fall prey to the ‘old people eventually lose it’ stereotype,” asserts Morris. “She is undoing the very thing that we love her for–being vibrant and funny and ”with it” in her 90′s.”

Morris continued, “We appreciate and applaud Betty White. But she needs to give us respect in return. Participating in a show that’s demeaning to older people is simply not the right thing to do. In so many ways Betty could use her talent, energy, and experience to choose projects that more accurately reflect the caliber, talent and continued competence of old people.” In the meantime, says Morris, “It’s time to retire ”Off Their Rockers.” It never belonged on the air in the first place.”

Barbara Morris, 84, is a pharmacist, writer, and anti-aging expert who lives the productive lifestyle she advocates. In addition to her monthly Put Old on Hold Journal and e-Magazine her books include Put Old on Hold, No More Little Old Ladies, Why, Boomer Women Become Their Mothers, and I’m Not Goin’ There!  Click here for the full critique of “Off Their Rockers

Attorney Receives National Community Service Award for Advocacy in Elder Law

March 30, 2013 by · Leave a Comment

The National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) is proud to announce the winner of the 2013 Powley Elder Law Award: Reginald H. Turnbull, of Jefferson City, Mo. This award is presented annually to a NAELA member who is recognized in his or her community as a leader in promoting a greater understanding of the rights and needs of the elderly and people with special needs, and of how Elder Law attorneys advocate for those rights.

The award was established in the memory of Wes and Helen Powley, grandparents of NAELA member Timothy L. Takacs, of Hendersonville, Tenn. Both Wes and Helen were active in civic affairs for all of their lives, and Wes practiced dentistry well into his 80s. The award is funded by a cash grant from the Takacs family to a nonprofit organization chosen by the Powley Award recipient.

For more than a decade, Turnbull has served as an officer and leader of the Missouri Chapter of NAELA, keeping fellow Chapter members up-to-date on important legislation and encouraging continuing education in the field through such legal education programs as the Chapter’s “Missouri Elder Law Fundamentals Institute.” He has been a Certified Elder Law Attorney by the National Elder Law Foundation since 2003 and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys.

Turnbull frequently speaks at local and statewide events on public and private benefits for people who are aged and people with disabilities. He serves on the pro-bono attorney panel of the Samaritan Center.

Turnbull has also demonstrated his commitment to promoting the needs of the elderly and special needs communities as past Chair and Board Member of the Missouri End-of-Life Coalition; as a past general manager and member of the Special Needs Alliance, a national organization of Special Needs Law attorneys; current Chair of the Elder Law Committee and Vice Chair of the Probate and Trust Committee of the Missouri Bar Association.

Turnbull is a Co-Chair of MO-WINGS, the working interdisciplinary network of guardianship stakeholders, which is rewriting Missouri’s guardianship code. He serves as a member of the Advisory Council of the Mid Missouri Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and Ethics Committee of the Capital Regional Medical Center.

As part of his recognition, Turnbull can direct $1,000 from the Takacs family to charities providing services to people with disabilities. He has chosen to have $500 awarded to the Cole County Residential Services and $500 to the Jefferson City Area Chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI).

Turnbull will receive the award at NAELA’s Annual Conference in Atlanta, being held May 2-4, 2013.

New Recording Studio Opens in Las Vegas – Vegas View Recording Welcomes Professional Artists and Students at IADT Campus

The International Academy of Design & Technology Las Vegas (IADT), a college offering Associate’s and Bachelor degrees in a variety of design and technology disciplines, announces the completion and opening of Vegas View Recording, a 2,500-sq-ft recording and mixing studio within its campus.  Designed by renowned studio architect Carl Yanchar and IADT’s Robert “Bobby” Ferrari, the industry standard recording studio is first and foremost a teaching studio for IADT students.  But Vegas View Recording at IADT is also available for hourly and daily lease by professionals and others seeking use of a high quality studio operated by seasoned professionals.

The studio includes a vocal booth, a 1,200-square-foot live recording room and industry current control room – all with a view of the Las Vegas Strip. The control room is equipped with an SSL-9080J console for mixing and recording on a large format analog desk.  The studio features a 48IO Pro Tools HDX system with a Waves Mercury Bundle, along with a compliment of outboard gear ranging from Neve 1073 Mic Pres, Summit Audio Pres, Eq’s, and Compressors, Bricasti Reverb, JCF Latté Convertors, and Dynaudio M3 Main Monitors with Lab Grupen Amps.

The acoustical design of the new facility is a modern take on the classic designs created by legendary designer, Bill Putman, dubbed by his peers as “the father of modern recording.” Traditional acoustic treatments, such as hard tile flooring, acoustical ceiling materials on the walls and acoustic absorbers near the floor for a deep low-end transmission, combine with modern technology in the control room to create a “new” version of a classic sound environment.

“We’re thrilled to offer to everyone – from the famous to the independent artist or group – these new professional quality services and recording facilities.  Vegas View Recoding has been designed as a top quality studio to record and experience working with professionals and students in a comfortable environment.  We are confident it will be a hit with recording artists, engineers, students and everyone who loves recording music,” said Ferrari, Studio Manager at IADT Las Vegas.

“This will be a great place in Nevada to learn the true art of modern recording techniques,” Ferrari added. “IADT students will experience what real sessions are like in a truly professional environment, learning the minutiae involved in operating and managing a facility of industry standards.”

Ferrari has a long and successful track record in Las Vegas of developing and operating recording studios.  In 1998, he oversaw the remodel and technical install of Lee Pepper Sound; advised and chief engineered Studio Vegas (now The Killers’ Battleborn Studios); performed gear upgrades for Digital Insight Recording; and co-designed, managed, and installed the TEC Award-nominated Odds On Records & Studios featured on the Cover of MIX Magazine in November 2009.

Vegas View Recording is located on the campus of InternationalAcademy of Design & Technology, Las Vegas, 2495 Village View Drive, Henderson, NV.   IADT Las Vegas is just minutes from McCarranInternationalAirport off Interstate 215, just west of Green Valley Parkway, overlooking the Las Vegas valley. For more information or a tour of Vegas View Recording contact Bobby Ferrari at 702-596-3219.

The studio officially opens for business on April 2. A grand opening is planned during the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, April 9, 2013.

About the International Academy of Design & Technology Las Vegas:

Gorgeous new assisted living in Henderson.  19 private rooms with full bathrooms.

THE BEE HIVE ASSISTED LIVING STORY

Bee Hive assisted living all began in 1987 when Twayne Walker built the first assisted living home in Meridian, Idaho.  In response to very limited quality care facilities, Twayne originally built the first Bee Hive Homes as a means to providing his grandmother with a nice place to live with quality care.  However, it didn’t take long to realize that there were many searching for the same serivces.  The Bee Hive Homes assisted living model itself is unique.  With a focus on smaller homes that resemble an actual residential home, Bee Hive Homes is dedicated to making the move to assisted living comfortable.  The motivation behind this innovative idea was developed around the concept that the elderly deserve a clean and comfortable family setting in a home at an affordable price when they reach a point in life where they need assisted living care. Many homes then available did not provide a pleasant atmosphere where residents could live happily. To make matters worse, the cost of most facilities was out of reach for many of the elderly and their families. During the construction phase of the first assisted living home, there was so much interest shown by potential residents that many of them were ready to move in as soon as it was completed. This kind of interest has continued unabated, and the demand is stronger than ever. We invite you to tour any of our Bee Hive Homes assisted living homes.

Socks For Seniors

Socks for Seniors is an annual community service project through which we organize collecting NEW socks to be distributed to elderly in local area nursing homes around the holidays.

The program begins with Make A Difference Day Saturday October27 – The Official Kick-off of the 2012 Socks For Seniors Campaign and runs thru Christmas.

We are looking for local area coordinators near Henderson to help with collecting socks this year.

There are two major ways that you could help us-

1. Help us promote Socks For Seniors. We are available for interviews. Media support in 2011 helped us grow the program into over 250 cities coast to coast. Complete information is available on our website about the program which my wife and I started 11 years ago. It is 100% volunteer based. We neither take or make money from it. We do not collect money, we collect SOCKS!

If you could schedule a time for an interview to help promote Socks For Seniors near Henderson please visit this link:

http://www.socksforseniors.com/media.html

In 2011 we did hundreds of media interviews. This form will help us keep everything organized so (hopefully) nothing falls thru the cracks!

2. Host a Sock Drive. It all starts with 1 person, 1 box, 1 location. It’s easy…and all the socks stay in the local Henderson area! If you have a nursing home, assisted living center or other senior community in mind for distribution – GREAT! If not,we will help connect you with a local senior community for distributing the socks at the end of the sock drive.

If you can decorate a box and find a location or locations for boxes – that’s all there is to it. Then together we can promote the sock drive.

To collect Socks For Seniors – please sign up atthis link:

http://www.socksforseniors.com/register.html

Then we can stay in touch with you during the campaign with updates and answering any questions you may have. You will also receive an email with signs and logos for the drive and otherinformation.

A BIG THANKS for reading this about Socks For Seniors. I wanted to get it out before everyone gets busy and begins thinking about the Holidays – which always seems to happen right after Halloween.

If I can answer any questions – please just reply to this email. If you can help us promote the program or collect socks please click a link above and you will be taken to the sign form.

Thanks again!

The print version of Nevada Senior Guide is free and is available throughout Las Vegas, Henderson, Green Valley, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Pahrump and Summerlin.

 NSG_FebMarApr_2014_Web01

The Nevada Senior Guide contains the Senior Services Directory including government and non-profit agencies that offer services to seniors in Nevada. These services include food and housing assistance, transportation for medical appointments and other life enhancing services.

A Level of Care Directory is included to assist in the selection of appropriate services in assisted living faculties.

Previously known as the Las Vegas Senior Guide, Mathis began the publication in 2001 because she recognized the need to inform seniors about services that were available to them. It is distributed in Von’s Grocery Stores, Whole Foods Grocery Stores, all libraries and hospitals through-out southern Nevada.

The online publication has now grown to become www.seniorguideusa.com and already includes states such as AlabamaCaliforniaFloridaIowaMarylandMassachusettsMinnesotaMississippiNew HampshireNorth CarolinaPennsylvaniaSouth CarolinaTennesseeVermontVirginiaWest Virginia… and more coming online each week…

Our Mission Statement:  To Publish the most popular, user friendly, visible, results-based, free publication & website

The publication is filled with informative articles that relate to Senior issues including health care, home health and leisure activities.

36a

“Seniors are a unique group because they have so many needs that aren’t met as easily as those of the younger generations,” Mathis stated. “They are the largest percentage of our country’s population and are always looking for resources and good deals, no matter what their income level. The directory is also useful to baby boomers who can use it to find resources for their aging parents.”

“I do not know of any other advertisement that gives you so much for the price and not only produces results, but also has a staff that goes out of its way to help their advertisers through education and networking. Megan and her staff WANT you to be successful. To not advertise in Nevada Senior Guide is like giving your competition referrals.”  - Mark A. Simmons, QDCS, Exploring Life Transitions, Memory Care Consultant

About Life Care

about Life CareYour family is special with its deep bonds and unique relationships. Facing a dramatic change – such as moving a loved one into assisted living or a nursing home – is an unsettling prospect for most people. Life Care Centers have helped families for decades to work through the difficult decisions about how best to care for their loved ones. We understand how trying it is to choose nursing home care for your loved one, and how most struggling caretakers feel there is no other choice.

That’s why we’re here.

We want those special members of your family to become equally special members of ours. We want to relieve the anxiety and frustration you may be experiencing by providing a nursing home community of constant support, attention and personalized care. Above all, we want to serve each person entrusted to us with compassion, dignity, purpose and respect.

That’s not just our goal. It’s our privilege.

Services

At Life Care Centers of America, we take elderly care very seriously. That’s why we offer residents a wide range of living arrangements and amenities, services and care. From home assisted living to retirement living to nursing homes – and even campuses that offer all three in a continuum of care – Life Care has the experience, expertise, and dedication to provide a full scope of specialty services.

Whether your needs include Alzheimer’s care, in-home nursing care, rehabilitation or recovery help, or any of a number of other specialty services, Life Care will be there, with all the support, education, and commitment you and your loved one need.

Rehabilitation

Life can deliver some unexpected twists: accidents, sudden illnesses or emergency surgeries can happen when you least expect them. And in the aftermath of such events, your energy is focused primarily on recovery—trying to also find the best available resources for help can be pretty challenging.

At Life Care, we understand the intense desire to recuperate and get back to normal as quickly as possible. But serious illness or trauma can sometimes force you to relearn even basic functions. The struggle to regain those lost capabilities while still recovering is frustrating and often overwhelming.

That’s when our teams of experts can make an overwhelming difference. Our skilled therapy services can hasten your recovery, help return lost skills and bring back strength and mobility. Our caring professionals work tirelessly with our residents not only in physical areas, but also by constantly supporting and encouraging them emotionally.

We believe our residents are the extraordinary people who refuse to allow temporary setbacks or disabilities to affect them permanently. Their determination and effort become invaluable tools in the rehabilitation process.

And it is our greatest privilege to partner with them—or you, or your loved one—during recovery … and become your strongest advocates in the road to reclaiming total wellness.

Life Care Centers of America

The sun setting is no less beautiful that the sun rising.

Imagine living in a beautiful, peaceful environment, surrounded by friends and activities.

Caring for Life…
Since 1970, Life Care Centers of America has been providing unequaled nursing care and assisted living service. Our continuum of care campuses give our residents an individual care plan through various levels of care. But it\’s our commitment to quality and professionalism that makes us second to none.

Choice

To provide choice, we offer a community environment rich in daily activities, restaurant-style dining, graciously appointed interiors, common living areas designed to draw people together and a variety of apartment styles.

Dignity

Dignity is treating every resident with individual value and respect. With this in mind we hire and train our professional caregivers to respond to each resident’s needs and preferences with dedication, patience and care.

Privacy

Privacy and individualized care are recognized and delivered in each resident’s apartment. Our dedicated and caring staff protects the privacy, modesty and wishes of each resident regarding the sharing of information as well as the involvement of family and others in the planning and delivery of personal services.

Independence

At Heritage Springs we recognize independence involves the free exercise of rights and the capacity of each individual to accept responsibility for his or her choices. The level of independence a resident desires is a matter of personal choice, as well as an important element of self-esteem. Heritage Springs encourages the right of each resident to continue to be as independent as possible.

Nevada-Senior-Guide Emeritus Senior Living-Las Vegas

www.emeritus.com

NSG_NovDecJan_2013-14_Web17

At Emeritus Senior Living, our residents’ well being is our top priority. We know that the number one reason people select a senior living community is the quality of the care they receive. (NIC National Survey) The ability to provide the most comprehensive and consistent personal care services begins with the resident evaluation process.

To that end, Emeritus Senior Living created a state-of-the-art computerized resident evaluation tool called wE Care™. This powerful software tool allows us to accurately evaluate and monitor all the personal care services of your loved one.

wE Care™

  • Provides current/immediate information on residents and allows improved communication from shift to shift
  • Generates specific care plans and task lists for your loved one so no services are overlooked
  • Allows for highly individualized information about your loved one’s needs, preferences, and special requirements
  • Customized to each resident, which means you only pay for the services that you need
  • Lessens the burden of administrative tasks, so that care staff can spend more meaningful time with your loved one

How our Resident Evaluation System Works:

Our system builds individual care plans from the completed evaluation, assigns tasks for staff and schedules the date of the next evaluation.

We understand that every senior has different needs and desires, so a selection of elder care services are available through the Emeritus Senior Living Family.

Expect us to take the time to get to know you – your interests, goals and desires – and to carefully evaluate your personal health history and care needs. Based on that evaluation, we’ll create a Service and Care Plan that reflects your specific needs. From getting up to getting around all day, help is always close at hand. Your plan may include any combination of the following:

Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRC)

Continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) provide a variety of services depending on your needs. From independent living to assisted living to skilled nursing these communities allow you to remain in the same familiar and comforting environment even if you should require extensive assistance.

Independent Living Services

When you choose to move into an Independent Living Community, you will continue to live the same lifestyle that you have become accustomed to at home, only you will have more time to enjoy your hobbies and socialize with friends, and you’ll spend less time worrying about housekeeping and maintenance.

Assisted Living Services

As we get older, many of us naturally need a helping hand – perhaps someone to help us get ready for the day, help manage our medications, or prepare special meals to fit our unique dietary needs.

Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

Many of our senior living communities are designed to care for seniors with Alzheimer’s, Dementia and/or memory loss issues.

Skilled Nursing

We are committed to helping you return home as quickly as possible by providing around-the-clock nursing care from some of the most professional licensed nurses, certified nursing assistants, dieticians, and physical and occupational therapists in the industry.

Long-Term Care

At Emeritus Senior Living we are dedicated to providing customized services to meet the individual needs of our residents. In select communities across the nation, we offer Long-Term Care and support for residents.

Rehabilitation Services

Our goal is to help our residents maintain or improve their level of functioning and help them lead more active and independent lives. Our communities partner with a wide range of healthcare providers who bring their expertise directly to the residents of our communities.

Respite Care

Most Emeritus communities offer a unique program called Short-Stay Respite. You’ll receive the same services all residents enjoy in a fully furnished apartment-home-cooked meals, scheduled transportation, customized assisted living services and more.

Hospice Care

At Emeritus Senior Living, we want to make sure that every moment is as comfortable as possible for your loved one if Hospice Care is needed.

Adult Day Programs

If you are living on your own or with family, you can also choose to spend the day with us through our structured Senior Day Care program.

In Home Visits

At an Emeritus Senior Living community, we are committed to making sure that local seniors in need find the combination of programs and services that serve them best, even if it is not with us.

Designed for Better Health and More Independence

At our communities, retirement living and assisted living doesn’t mean dependence upon others; it means independence. How? When seniors have the opportunity to meet new people and join in new activities, when they’re served three healthy meals a day, when they’re taken to their medical appointments and provided the daily assistance they need, their level of functioning improves. And when they’re feeling better, they have greater independence and can enjoy life more.

Most Emeritus senior living communities offer these amenities:*

  • Choice of private or shared apartments with a variety of floor plans and sizes to meet virtually any need
  • Some apartments are fully furnished – and all can be individualized with your own belongings
  • Large walk-in showers with safety features or full baths
  • Individual climate control
  • Spacious common areas, including living room, library and TV room
  • Private dining room and catering services for special occasions
  • Smoke detectors, fire alarms and sprinkler systems
  • Completely maintenance-free, inside and out
  • Beautifully landscaped grounds offering an ideal setting for relaxing outdoors

And these services:*

  • Two or three homemade meals served each day, restaurant-style, coordinated by a registered dietician
  • A diverse, full-time recreational and educational activities program
  • Scheduled transportation for shopping, visits to nearby attractions and to medical or dental appointments – no more fighting traffic or searching for parking!
  • Weekly housekeeping, linen and laundry service
  • 24-hour emergency alert call systems

And many of our senior living communities also allow residents to bring their pets!

* Depending upon your situation and health concerns, assisted living services are also available.
